Vegan Pizza Bread Sticks – A quick and easy recipe with just five ingredients and with the most delicious outcome. They go as a starter, or in company of a bowl of hot tomato soup, or just to be dipped into your favorite extra virgin olive oil. The essential oils from the dried herbs kneaded into the dough will make a lovely aroma in your mouth. Choose your favorite combination of dried herbs, i have used rosemary, origano and thyme.
Vegan Five Ingredient Pizza Bread Sticks
Prepare all your ingredients.
Sieve 250 grams of flour into a bowl and add 1/2 a teaspoon of salt.
Now add dry yeast to the flower and stir all dry ingredients in your bowl until well combined.
With your hands make a little pit into the flour and fill it with 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil.
Add a tablespoon of dried herbs to your dough and rub the herbs between your fingers to set free the aroma and essential oils captured in the herbs.
With a spoon fold the oil and dried herbs into the flour.
Slowly and bit by bit add the warm water
and knead the dough with your hands (or a kitchen machine) to combine all ingrdients
Continue to knead the dough a few minutes until all ingredients are well combined and the dough has a soft texture
Now your dough is ready to rest and rise. Form your dough into a ball.
Put your dough ball into a plastic bowl, and cover it with a bit of flour
Now either put your dough in a warm place to rest and rise, or just fill some warm water in your kitchen sink.
Place your bowl into the warm water, so it stands in the sink, just warmed up from below through the water, but no water gets inside the bowl
Then cover your bowl with a kitchen towel and put a timer on 40 minutes
Wait until your dough has doubled it's volume, this process may take between 40 and 60 minutes and requires a warm surrounding temperature.
Line a baking tray with non-sticking parchment paper
Take the dough out of the bowl and place it on top of a bit of flour on your countertop. Preheat your oven to 220° Celsius / 430° Fahrenheit
Now cut your dough in half
Knead your dough and form it into a long loaf
Then cut your dough into eight similar pieces
The pieces should all have about the same size
Between the palms of your hands form each piece into a bread stick
Put them down and with your fingers flatten them a bit
Put the bread sticks side by side on your baking tray lined with parchment paper
Cover the breadsticks with a kitchen towel for 20 - 30 minutes more resting.
Prepare a baking brush and a little bowl of extra virgin olive oil
Brush your bread sticks with a thin layer of olive oil.
Place the baking tray for 12 - 15 minutes into the oven, preheated at 200°C / 430° Fahrenheit
After 12 - 15 minutes the bread sticks will have a golden color on the surface and then they are ready to be taken out of the oven.
Enjoy your deliciously baked pizza bread sticks warm or cooled down.
They make a great addition to a hot bowl of wonderful tomato soup on a cold day.
You can also let them cool down and then dip them into your favorite extra virgin olive oil. Enjoy baking vegan!
